Sales Prediction
When you visit a Tesco store at Christmas, why are there bottles of Prosecco next to delicious salmon menus? Shouldn’t they belong in the Beer and Wine section? And why if you by a spare part for your car, does the shop or website often recommend you buy another part to go with it. Is this all a plan to make you buy more?
Yes and there is a good reason. This is percieve and predict in action. At some point in history, the supermarket discovered that buyers of salmon often tended to buy sparkling wine at the same time. The spare part supplier also noticed that when one item was sold, a short time later a second linked one was bought, perhaps because of a related problem. For both retailers there is a definite association! Data mining, also known as Market Basket Analysis, showed by associating the two items together, sales of both would rise.
